A tuft of hair is left at the withers on a roached mane? The chief reason is for the horse's comfort. A saddle blanket riding atop freshly-cut mane hairs could cause irritation, whereas a saddle placed across the tuft of wither hairs will ride smoothly.
Manes were roached? In the early 1800's, roaching manes was used by Mexican soldiers when capturing wild mustangs for replacement mounts. Before releasing any useless horses, their manes and tails were roached, so anyone who saw them knew they were valueless.
Some members of the equine species are called ponies? The word pony means something smaller than standard.
We call the exhibition given by cowboys and cowgirls a "rodeo"? Every event in a rodeo, in some form or other, was developed through daily work on the range, usually during a spring roundup. The word rodeo is Spanish for a surround, or roundup.
The act of a cowboy wrapping his rope around the saddle horn is called dallying or dollying? The Spanish phrase for this action is da la vuelta. The cowboy, in his colorful jargon simplified the tongue-twister to dolly welter, or simply, dolly.
Riders usually mount their horses from the left? Because soldiers usually carried their swords on their left hip, mounting from the left side of the horse would not interfere with their weapon. Many early cowboys were Civil War veterans.
